FST-7 Everybody's doing it. True, it sounds more like a top-secret government weapons programme than it does a method for building a bigger, better physique in a shorter amount of time, but seeing how it tops the playlist of established pros and rising amateurs alike, we got the full scoop on the what, how and why of the training system that's all the rage — straight from the man who thought it up and put it on the map: nutritionist and trainer Hany Rambod. Rambod, who's been helping athletes be all they can be since the late '90s, boasts a roster of A-listers that includes names such as IFBB Pro League athletes Phil "The Gift" Heath, Bill Wilmore, Ed Nunn and NPC amateurs Tamer El-Guindy, Branden Ray and a host of others. CALL IT A COMEBACK IT TOOK STAN MCQUAY EIGHT YEARS from the time he first stepped on a bodybuilding stage to turn pro, which he did at the 2006 NPC Nationals when he won the light-heavyweight title. Then, he disappeared — from competitive bodybuilding at least. Did he flake? some wondered. Did he crumble under the pressure of the pro ranks? others speculated. "It was at that time that my personal-training business started to blow up," McQuay explains. "I ended up working with a few celebrities, and then I signed an exclusive contract with Dr. Dre, which allowed me to travel around the world with him. Because I was travelling all the time, I couldn't focus on my training as much, so competing wasn't really an option. I focused on opening a gym and expanding my personal-training business. I went where the money was." Fast-forward to Saturday, August 1, 2009, at the IFBB Jacksonville Pro Under 202. Stan McQuay stands triumphant with arms aloft as he is presented the winner's trophy and cheque in this standalone 202 show.
"I signed with a supplement company and they wanted to help get my name back out there," McQuay says. "That, coupled with the 202, made a return to competition a good fit for me, so here we are." Welcome back, Stan. Dr. Dre's loss is bodybuilding's gain…
