WHERE'S THE BEEF?
ON STAGE AT THE NPFC/IFBB
AUSTRALASIA CHAMPIONSHIPS!
With the best male and female bodybuilders from Australia and New Zealand, also six time Mr.Olympia, Ronnie Coleman, guest posing and over 2,000 people in attendance, the capacity packed crowd at Revesby Workers Club knew this would be a day that they would not forget in a hurry!
As Paul Graham declared the show officially open the audience erupted into cheers and applause as they knew it was now show time! Just as the audience had calmed down, Ronnie Coleman walked on to the stage to give an interview which excited the audience once again. The applause was still ringing out as the Australasian teenage champion, 17 year old Mahmoud Omar from NSW, posed his way to his 1st place trophy and title. The junior title would come down to two competitors from NSW and one from New Zealand, with 3rd going to 20 year old Peter Roy from NSW who was only 1 point behind 2nd placed Juan-Pablo Corea, who was also from NSW. The unanimous winner of every round was 20 year old Adrian Tevaga from New Zealand who really got the audience behind him with his dynamic routine.
Now from the youth of the sport to the matured muscle of the over 40 years of age masters competitors. This came down to a battle of two, with 40 year old Mohamad Agha beating 55 year old Mustapha Hamid for the Masters over-40 1st place trophy.
As competitors in the men's novice category walked out there were bodybuilders of all shapes and sizes. The surprise packet was Carl Hamington, a junior competitor from New Zealand, who was over 10kg lighter than all the other bodybuilders in his class, But Carl turned out to be a giant killer by placing 3rd in a closely contested category. 2nd went to Wayne Adock from NSW behind Joe Giampaolo from the ACT who was over the moon with his 1st place trophy.
In the women's open bodybuilding division it was Jenni Douglas, a teacher from New Zealand, teaching the other competitors what you need to win the Australasia. With a rock hard muscular physique, Jenni kept her fellow New Zealand competitor Ra Paku in 2nd place and Ra made sure that New Zealand picked up the quinella by pushing Telia Raciti from QLD in to 3rd place.
It was time for NSW & Glen Stollery from NSW in his first ever contest to reign supreme by winning the under-70kg Australasian title ahead of James Zimmermann, a 22 year old personal trainer from New Zealand.
The men's under-80kg category was one of the hardest classes to judge on the day with a lot of exceptional bodybuilders flexing their way towards the top 3. Danny Newland from NSW should be very proud as he kept out a lot of good bodybuilders for his 3rd place trophy. Rhommel Pardilanan from QLD might have finished 2nd but he still pushed the eventual winner Chady Elcheik from NSW all the way, making sure that Chady definitely earned his 1st place trophy.
Just when you thought the competition couldn't get any harder, the under-90kg category walked out on stage. 3rd went to Steve Curran from NSW, with Sifa Mafia from New Zealand placing 2nd. Sifa has great shape and genetics and he posses a physique that can take him as far as he wants to go in this great sport of ours. The winner was Peter Terrizzi from VIC by only 5 points, Peter has a lot of quality muscle packed onto his frame and like the saying goes you can't beat quality muscle and Peter proved that on th day.
The over-90kg division saw VIC, NSW & QLD all hoping for that elusive 1st place trophy, and as Harry Bickers from NSW was announced 3rd it was now between VIC & QLD. It was a disappointed Gary Mathewson from Vic who was announced 2nd and it must have been hard for him to hear his name called out for second as he was in such good shape. But it was David Cutler from QLD who made sure that he nailed everything on the day including the heavyweight Australasian title and the 1st place trophy.
There was a time when the heavyweights were the highlight of the day, but that was before Paul Graham had introduced the Paul Graham pro-qualifier and masters pro-qualifier. There was no disputing the Masters pro-qualifier winner, Pietro Gilberto from NSW at 42 years of age was placed 1st by every judge. Runner up position went to La'mon Amede who had great symmetry and shape but did not come in hard enough to be a threat to Pietro.
The open pro-qualifier saw history being created. The judges were split between two bodybuilders with two totally different physiques. So Paul Graham decided that he would not end one of these competitor's dream of becoming a pro by a count back or by getting the judges to rejudge these two great bodybuilders. In his wisdom he awarded two pro cards, one to Lee Newman from Qld, and one to Ivan Sadek from NSW. And this was probably the most popular decision of the day with well over a 2,000 people applauding and cheering Paul Graham, Lee Newman and Ivan Sadek.
So as the curtain comes down on another show the only thing left to say is, Paul & Carole Graham you have done it again - another unbelievable fabulous competition and job well done.
I also applaud you... And I can hardly wait until the next one!
