On Thursday 17th September in Notting Hill, Melbourne, the first Musashi Experience Performance Centre was officially launched. Along with a host of media and sporting celebrities, the Muscle & Fitness crew were there to support, sticky beak and eat lots of food.
With many of Australia’s elite sporting athletes, teams and coaches in attendance it was a good chance to mingle with some sporting celebs and see what all the fuss was about.
The Centre was officially opened by Owen Nelson, Nestlé Performance Nutrition Regional Business Head, AOA. “The Musashi Experience Performance Centre is the first multidisciplinary performance based centre of its kind. Our objective is to keep at the forefront of sports supplement development and create an environment where we can engage with athletes about what supplement solutions they need to take to achieve their optimum performance goals.”
THE MUSASHI EXPERIENCE
The centre offers the following:
- A fully equipped gym with Hammer Strength and Life Fitness equipment for athletes to train on
- A 30-seat lecture theatre for seminars, product training and team meetings
- Two exercise physiologists to work with amateur and professional athletes
- Bodyology – Exercise Science Studio which provides access to the Bod Pod unit for body composition analysis, indirect calorimetry metabolism analysis and VO2 Testing
- Product development lab where the company undertakes ongoing innovation or renovation of its products. The idea is to get immediate feedback from athletes in training on the effectiveness of the products, and to allow new concepts to be trialled with athletes before being released to the market.
Marshal Adam, Nestlé’s Performance Nutrition Business Development Manager, explained that “Musashi has been working closely with high performance coaches and athletes, along with technical and scientific specialists to develop the range of Musashi products over the past 21 years.
“The facility allows recreational athletes to train alongside professional, olympic and amateur level competitors, allowing the sharing of information in an environment where the commonality is performance and progression in various sports. It also allows us greater access to the athletes, in order to more effectively design product to improve athletic performance.”
The facility has already seen some of Australia’s elite come though the doors with the Melbourne Storm as well as four AFL teams – Essendon, Hawthorn, North Melbourne and Richmond – already attending the facility for body composition testing.
Marshal told me that clinical trials were commencing in the facility right away to support the product development side of the business and to ensure all products that Musashi produce have scientific evidence to support their use as a performance supplement.
A highlight of the day was big Derek Boyer attempting an Australian deadlift record of 370 kg. The current record of 366 kg was looking in trouble when he lifted 320 kg and 360 kg with relative ease. Derek then lifted 370 kg but not in one smooth movement so the record still remains. It still looked bloody impressive.
I bumped into Jon Davie, IFBB pro, who said that they are running product training seminars for personal trainers, gyms and retails outlets to educate on the proper use and the science supporting the products. He also seemed pretty happy to have a facility of that quality to train in when he visits Melbourne.
The Centre is extremely impressive and showcases Musashi’s commitment to remaining Australia’s leading performance nutrition company and supporting athletes in Australia. M&F
